Fixing the Pipe Without Opening the Yard
Trenchless sewer repair renews a lateral without digging a trench along its full length. For a St. Joseph home with a mature oak over the line, a long front walk, terraced steps or a driveway between the house and the street, that can be the difference between a repair and a yard rebuild.
Two methods
Cured-in-place pipe (CIPP) lining. A resin-saturated liner is pulled or inverted into the old pipe, inflated against its walls and cured in place. The result is a jointless pipe inside the old one, which seals the joints and cracks that roots used to enter. It works when the old pipe still holds its shape and slope. HomeAdvisor lists lining at about $90 to $250 per foot.
Pipe bursting. A bursting head is pulled through the old line, breaking it outward while a new pipe follows behind. It works on pipe that is too damaged to line, and it can keep the same size or go up a size. HomeAdvisor lists bursting at about $60 to $200 per foot.
When trenchless is not the answer
Trenchless methods follow the old pipe's path. If the line has a deep sag where water and solids collect, a section has fully collapsed, or the slope is wrong, a liner copies the problem. Orangeburg that has flattened badly may need to be burst or dug out rather than lined. We decide from the camera footage, and if the line needs a trench at one spot and lining elsewhere, we quote it that way.
Preparing the old pipe
Lining only bonds and cures well in a clean pipe. Before a liner goes in, the line is cleaned with a cutter or water jet to remove roots, scale and debris, then filmed again. Service connections and the transition at each end are planned so the liner does not leave a lip that catches solids.
What still gets dug
Most trenchless jobs need an access point at each end: a basement or outdoor cleanout, or a small pit near the house and another near the main. Pipe bursting typically needs two pits. That is far less than a full trench, but it is not zero. The quote shows where the pits go and how the surface is restored.
Permits still apply
Trenchless work is still plumbing work on a sewer lateral. St. Joseph's building department says plumbing work must be done by city-licensed master plumbers, and if a pit lands in the right-of-way it needs its own permit. We list those permits on the quote.

Trenchless Sewer Repair Questions
Is trenchless sewer repair cheaper than digging?
Per foot, trenchless and open-trench ranges overlap. Trenchless often costs less overall when a driveway, mature trees, steps or landscaping sit over the line, because there is much less to restore.
Can you line a clay sewer pipe?
Usually, if the clay still holds its shape and slope. Lining seals the joints roots enter through. Badly offset or collapsed sections may need a spot repair first.
Can Orangeburg pipe be lined?
Only if it still holds most of its round shape. Orangeburg tends to flatten with age, and a flattened pipe usually needs bursting or replacement instead.
Will roots grow through a liner?
A cured liner has no joints for roots to enter along its length. Roots can still enter at an unlined section or at the transition, which is why those points are planned carefully.
